Feedback for your preliminary exercise:
- This is a great preliminary exercise – well done! I really like the opening shots… nice over-the-shoulder shot and pan, excellent communication of the character realising who it is and then the start of the chase. The music is effective here too.
- I wonder if the choice of location is a bit of an issue. The number of people (particularly children) in the background takes away a bit of the tension and drama. This is emphasised in the dialogue scene as the background sound takes the focus away from your characters.
- Good lesson for audio levels – you bring the music down for the dialogue which is good but I wonder if it’s actually too low / stops completely? It means the atmosphere changes (particularly with the sound of children in the background).
- The dialogue links to the fantasy genre effectively but it’s similar to the example I did in class in that it’s pretty obvious. If you can make your real coursework slightly more subtle in how it links to the fantasy genre that would help push towards the highest levels.
WWW:
- Effective music
- Nice over-the-shoulder shot and pan and opening shots
- Excellent communication of the character realising who it is and then the start of the chase
EBI:
- When there is dialogue film indoors because outside noise like wind or children take away the suspense and tension.
- Audio levels when there was dialogue was too low next time fade the audio
- It was too obvious to tell it was a fantasy genre through dialogue next time make your real coursework slightly more subtle in how it links to the fantasy genre.
What have you learned from the preliminary exercise that will help you in the actual coursework project? List three things you have learned or will do differently as a result of this exercise. You may want to comment on organisation, actors, filming, editing or something else entirely but be specific.
Three things I have learned or I will differently do as a result of this exercise:
- Film dialogue indoors so actors speech can be heard clearly.
- Work on fading audio when there is dialogue so music doesn't randomly stop so it sounds smooth.
- Narrative more unique and less obvious to fantasy genre so audience know its fantasy through what they watch and not what they hear.
